Abstract

Utvidgade skötselgator som skapas vid trädsäkring av järnvägar kan röjas selektivt för att utveckla skogsbryn som kan bidra till naturvården och landskapsbilden. För detta krävs robusta skötselmodeller för skogsbryn anpassade till infrastrukturmiljöer. Trafikverket har därför finansierat forskning och utveckling av nya skötselmodeller för skogsbryn. Denna rapport redovisar etableringen av ett fullskaligt skötselförsök - ForEDGE (Forest Edge Development Gradient Experiment) där dessa skötselmodeller har lagts ut på 25 olika lokaler längs Södra stambanan och ger en första preliminär bedömning av dessa modeler.

Selective cutting of woody species can support development of graded forest edges with low shrubs at the periphery and increasingly higher shrubs and trees toward the forest interior. Such forest edge profiles are often considered as ideal in infrastructure environments since they provide valuable ecosystem services while keeping hazardous trees at distance from railways, roads, power lines and houses. However there is a lack of robust and simple management systems for graded forest edges. Therefore the Swedish Transport Administration and the Department
of Landscape Architecture, Planning and Management, SLU Alnarp has initiated the Research
& Demonstration project ForEDGE - Forest Edge Development Gradient Experiment. Two
management systems have been developed and implemented at 25 sites selected to span the
decisive environmental gradients along the 610 km railway line between Mamö and Stockholm,
Southern Sweden. The two management systems are 1) Zoned Selective coppice (ZSC) which
is based on threshold height decreasing stepwise from the inner through the middle to the
outer edge zone, resulting in height and density gradients over the edge cross-section, and 2)
‘BATAG’ where all individuals of the most common tree species Betula pendula/pubescens,
Populus tremula, Pinus sylvestris, Alnus glutinosa, Picea abies are cut, while all individuals
of other species are maintained. BATAG is the acronym for the first letter in the five species
Swedish names, Björk, Asp, Tall, Al, Gran, and selective cutting of these dominant species is
hypothesized to halter the development of abrupt edge profiles and parallel support development
of a large diversity of shrub and small trees species. Initial field test and evaluation indicates
that both ZSC and BATAG have potential for full scale implementation. As only basic species
knowledge is required, the management systems can easily be implemented in practice. In an
international perspective, ForEDGE is one of few large scale field trials whit manipulation
of forest edges through management. Long-term evaluation of ForEDGE will enable further
development and adjustment of the management systems ZSC and BATAG.
