The non-market value of game for hunters has been recognised and estimated by several studies since the early 1970s, but to date there have been few systematic assessments of this research which have been applied to specific countries and/or measurements of hunting values. The present study performed a meta-regression analysis of the determinants of the value of hunting from 118 studies with different regional applications, game animals, valuation methods and measurements. Statistical performance and predictive power of a full model with all value estimates are compared with sub-sample models with homogenous value estimates. Moderator variables included GDP (gross domestic product) per capita, publication outlet, regional application, type of animal hunted, valuation method and unit of measurement. Using mixedeffect models, the results showed that GDP per capita, type of game animal and value measurement units had significant effects on estimated values, while the valuation method did not. Sub-sample models of valuation method and measurement did show higher statistical performance than the full models and improved predictions for valuation method and measurement models, but not for game species models.
