China's textile and apparel industry is facing pressure to take CSR initiatives. The implementation of CSC9000T, based on a consumer-oriented and sustainable development philosophy, is a milestone to the industrial development. CSC9000T has similar features as the standards SA8000 and ISO 26000. Focus is on social aspects, with relatively vague environmental guidelines and lack of third-party audits. Motives for implementation have initially been driven by international pressure groups and customer expectations. An initial internal focus is placed on education and company policies. The role of the Chinese government and authorities is to strengthen and legitimise the industry. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
