Abstract

In 300 field experiments the correlation between N yield in not N fertilized plots and the soil organic matter content was investigated. The amounts of N taken up in cereal grain yields and to a minor extent in oil seed yields were calcultated in experiments located all over Sweden and carried out during 1990-1998. For each percentage unit increase in soil organic matter the grain N uptake increased by 2,5 kg per ha. Grouping the experiments by regions gave very similar results between the regions. In clay soils the correlation was somewhat stronger or slightly more than 3 kg N per percentage unit soil organic matter. If these results are calculated as N fertilizer they correspond to a difference of 7 kg N on a light soil and 10 kg per ha on a clay soil
