Beskrivning av fem myrjordsprofiler från Gotland

Berglund, Kerstin

Abstract

The paper gives a description of five bogland soil profiles from five different mires on Gotland, an island off the southeast Swedish coast. The purpose was to characterize the physical properties of the soils especially in relation to water. After the introduction, the bedrock and the mires on the island are briefly described. Some extra emphasis is placed on the description of the special organic soil types that the limestone bedrock has given rise to, partly “bleke" or lake marl with high lime content, 80-95 %, partly lime gyttja a soil with a lower lime content. In sections 4 and 5 two special properties of peat, volume shrinkage and rewetting, are discussed. Information on the extent of the investigations is given in sections 6-9. In section 10 the profiles are described, together with some geological data, particle size distribution and loss of ignition (tables 10.1, 10.6, 10.9 and figs. 10.5, 10.14), pictures of monoliths (figs. 10.2, 10.6, 10.9 and 10.15), structure and root depth, some physical and chemical data (tables 10.2, 10.4, 10.7, 10.10 and 10.12), volume relations in the profiles (tables 10.3, 10.15, 10.8, 10.11, 10.13 and figs. 10.3, 10.7, 10.10, 10.12, 10.16 showing data on the relation between tension and water content). The description of each profile ends with a short summary. In sections 11 and 12 comparisons are made between the profiles regarding the depth of the organic soil (fig. 11.1) and the waterholding capacities (table 12.1). The paper ends with a discussion, section 13. The results have been used in estimates of the cultivation value of the soils from the physical point of view. Four of the profiles, Elinghems myr, Mästermyr, Mörby myr and Stångmyr have a large storage of water that is available to the plants and these are therefore characterized as good arable soils. The fifth, Holmmyr, has a small storage of available water due to limited possibilities of root penetration, and is thus a low-yielding soil.
