Abstract

The Concerted Action "Experiences with the impact of subsoil compaction on soil, crop growth and environment and ways to prevent subsoil compaction", was started in 1998, to collect and combine experiences and data on subsoil compaction in Western Europe. One of the objectives was also to construct a database including soil mechanical properties and the impact of subsoil compaction on soil and crop properties. Within the concerted action, six working groups were formed: WGl. Modeling impact of subsoil compaction on crop growth, water availability to plants and environmental aspects. WG2. Modeling the compaction process. WG3. Interactions in the tyre-soil interface. WG4. Soil mechanical measurements and measurement techniques. WG5. Setup of field experiments, measurement of soil physical properties, crop growth and environmental aspects. WG6. Equipment selection and field practices for control of subsoil compaction. These proceedings include presentations made at the 3rd workshop of the Concerted Action 14-16 June 2000, Uppsala, Sweden, mainly divided into sections based on the working group subjects. The papers are later intended to be published in a special issue of Soil and Tillage Research
